Student Comments

Many students have provided very encouraging comments at the end-of-term evaluations, and here is a collection of comments. Listed below are student comments for just one course.

In Winter 2024, I taught Making Financial Decisions, a Non-BBA level core course at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. Here are some nice things my students said about this course.

Extremely well-structured - the website is thorough and there are more than sufficient resources to ensure success. The exams are hard, yes, but the concept of finance itself is a hard and new topic in itself. Saying the exams are hard does not mean the exams are unfair - the professor gives plenty of examples, homeworks, and practice exams to prepare. That is a great strength of this course: you set yourself up for failure or success. The concepts are explained well by the professor, and there are opportunities for you to do it yourself too. It is structured very well, and there is a sense of independence and steering your own wheel.
Professor Lei was the most organized and clear professor I have ever had. His site and the plethora of material he provided us was above and beyond. Truly an incredibly structured course that made me extremely confident in navigating any introductory finance topics. Would recommend this course to any UM student.
Qin Lei truly cares about his students’ performance and tries to motivate us as much as possible. The class is also designed to be adaptive to multiple learning styles so regardless of whether someone worked better alone or in a group, there were options for both.
Instructor INSANELY well organized, super clear with objectives and policies, graded consistently and fairly.
Qin is extremely organized as a professor. He is also very transparent about what is required and how to succeed in the course.
Incredibly organized website with all course materials easily accessible
Team trivia was helpful, good to work with other students. The stock trading game was fun, and forced me to learn about how to trade stocks. Practice exams were helpful but should have been emphasized to students. Cheat sheets on exams were plenty fair and helpful, and appreciated.
The lectures provided and abundance of information that aided in understanding the text book. Additionally, Prof. Lei did an excellent job of incorporating real world examples that connected to topics to aid in understanding their real world application.
It’s clear that professor Lei has modified this course over time to make it the best possible for students. He puts a lot of thought into this class.
I appreciated the groupwork aspect, as it gave me a built-in support network that I could always ask questions to my classmates for. I also appreciated how Professor Lei was very timely with responses on Piazza. And, having practice exams for each chapter of the course was very helpful.
I like that this course heavily relied on the textbook because I always had a reference to check when I missed something in class. I also liked the remote option, as I pay attention a lot better when it’s not early in the morning so it was nice to have the option to watch the lecture throughout the day.
it is just a near flawless course
Office hours were extremely helpful. All the materials on the website were also really helpful for learning. I liked how the homework was all due before the exam with unlimited as it gave students the flexibility to learn at their own pace.
It was very comprehensive and broad in its scope which allowed me, who is not necessarily interested in becoming a consultant, to learn about things that are applicable to my desired profession, while still having more specific lessons to learn if I were to want to become a consultant or something similar.
The course provided an abundance of resources for students to utilize, like practice exams, videos, and a dedicated website.
I believe that the Mcgraw-Hill Connect assignments were very valuable for learning. Incentivizing students to learn while doing the homework rather than focusing on getting the right answer immediately was also very beneficial. I thought the organization of this course was really well done.
The resources on the course page were extremely thorough and I feel like I could’ve found the answer to any of my questions almost anywhere.
I think it was very organized and the professor seemed like he wanted everyone to do well in the class.
The nature of the homework questions and exams were very consistent across the course and I thoroughly appreciated how the textbook actually reflected what was taught in the course and I never had to double check what was different across the lecture material and textbook material.
the preparation and the resources available to students made it easier to succeed with potentially challenging subject matter
The subject matter is interesting and important knowledge to have.
I thought that Professor Lei was clear about the guidelines for the class, and midterms exams were very fair given our practice exams.
