Student Comments

Many students have provided very encouraging comments at the end-of-term evaluations, and here is a collection of comments. Listed below are student comments for just one course.

In Winter 2025, I taught Making Financial Decisions, a Non-BBA level core course at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. Here are some nice things my students said about this course.

I believe the main strength of this course was Professor Lei. He was incredible clear and enthusiastic in class. He was also very accommodating for students by offering lecture and office hours via Zoom. He was also very accessible and helpful outside of class. I regularly attending his exam review sessions and personal office hours. In these sessions, he was very kind and allowed the revision of mistakes made in prior exams. He was also very encouraging and truly wanted his students to learn the content and improve on exams. Additionally, Professor Lei was extremely prepared with his website entirely set before the beginning of the semester.
This class is one of the best university courses I have taken.
Professor Lei is a great instructor. He clearly explains course material and walks through examples during class. His use of the OneNote document and computer version of the BA II Plus Professional calculator helped me better understand each step when solving challenging problems. The class had a great structure as well. I always knew what I was going to be tested on for each exam, and Professor Lei provided plenty of practice exam questions.
It was engaging and Prof. Lei is very committed to his students. He is always willing to help and clarify. He is extremely knowledgable and enthusiastic about finance. The focus on practice problems in class was very helpful.
It was a good finance course. I learned a lot, and I feel I now have a much better understanding of finance than I did going in. So, for an intro to finance course, it seems successful.
Professor Qin was extremely organized and I appreciated the consistent class structure. I like knowing what to expect each week and thought all the exams were reasonable.
Having an assigned study group in which we communicated each week to work on the trivia questions was extremely helpful. Also, accommodating to certain situations for students, for example, allowing them to join the class zoom from home if they cannot come in person that day but can still get attendance points.
I believe this was an excellent course with incredible instruction, specifically because of the preparation and clarity provided by Professor Lei.
Professor Qin actually cares about his students, it can be evidenced in the opportunities he offers and in the well detailed responses he makes on piazza
The content was very interesting and the professor explained material very clearly
Very well taught, and built upon concepts to increase overall understanding.
The professor, structure of lecture and homework and exams, as well as the solutions being posted and available. The accessibility to more practice for exams was also wonderful.
The professor is very kind and understanding of situations. He always gives help when you need it.
Professor Lei writes very fair exams, with questions that reflect concepts learned in class, on homeworks, in trivia, etc. It has never felt like exam questions were impossible or not gone over.
Lots of options for how to attend class and weekly check-ins to test your knowledge of the material were very helpful
This course is great because it allows you to be self paced based on the resources offered outside of live lectures.
The website is really clear
The course was predicatble, every week was the same expectations which was useful. This course got through a lot of material and Qin Lei did a good job in explaining how many of the concepts would play out in the real world.
The homework taught me a lot, and the website had so many great resources on it.
The course web I believe helps a lot, which includes all materials we need.
The expertise and experience of Professor Qin.
I think it’s a very well-taught course. I really enjoyed the trading game.
It covers a wide range of topics that provide students with a broader knowledge of finance than before we took the class.
The online problems were very helpful for understanding course content.
The information was explained very clearly and there were real-world examples used to help support the information we were learning.
Qin Lei was a great teacher, just sometimes hard to understand. I clearly understood expectations and where I stood in relation to the rest of the class in order to get a good grade. I am not very interested in finance but I found this class a lot more engaging and manageable over some of the other classes I have taken recently (like accounting). I also really liked how he incentivized attending class - you can drop your lowest exam grade if you miss fewer than 3 classes, but also sometimes that can be avoided by attending synchronously over Zoom. It was a great way to make sure the class was accessible and doable and to ensure no one was coming to class sick.
The course provided me with a basic understanding of many new finance topics.
Trivia, homework’s, and practice exams were a strength of this course. Offering students ways to practice throughout the semester.
Making the homeworks optional was helpful. The course helped me understood how time influences money, and how the stock market works.
Lots of resources to practice and engage with the content.
Practice exams were helpful
The curriculum
Amount of practice material.
The structure of the course material.
The strengths of this course were its organization, however that was almost to a fault. The incredibly high standards for students hurt my understanding and participation in this course.
