Student Comments

Many students have provided very encouraging comments at the end-of-term evaluations, and here is a collection of comments. Listed below are student comments for just one course.

In Spring 2022, I taught Financial Management and Policy, an OMBA level elective course at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. Here are some nice things my students said about this course.

1 Gautum and Qin’s passion for the subject really came through in this course and that definitely contributed to my interest in the subject matter.
2 I really enjoyed the professors. They broke things down in a way that made them easy to understand. The pacing made it so things that might be complicated were simplified. Professor Kaul’s modules were easy to follow and told in a way that simplified issues.
3 Gautam, Qin, and Peter all went out of their way to explain the practical applications of the covered topics. They did so in an upbeat and very approachable way. I greatly appreciated that.

5 The professors and the ISS did a great job explaining the concepts.
6 I never thought working together with other people would help my learning of finance – however it certainly did! I ended up really enjoying the group project and learned a lot from my classmates. I also learned well from Gautam’s modules as he explained things very intuitively.
7 The professors typically did a good job of emphasizing the conceptual foundation of ideas, which I think gave us the best opportunity to learn material in a way that it could be understood and retained, and the difficulty level of the course seemed appropriate.
8 I thought the course generally laid out formulas very clearly, and used practical examples that we can apply in our lives and in our work. I like how the group project made us draw from the entire course and apply these skills to a real-world experience. Peter was very responsive and helpful to questions that were asked. I liked how Gautam was very personable and methodical in the videos.
9 Peter is incredibly fast in responding to our emails. The professors are very experienced in both the topic and teaching the topic!
10 Peter Clarke’s support was really great, he was very accommodating and helpful in explaining parts of the material that were unclear for me from the videos or class.
11 Very clear introduction of the key concepts. Provide very valuable tools for the students in the normal business practice. Extensive case study in the live session.

13 Professor Gautam Kaul is an excellent teacher. He explains hard concepts in such a way that is easy to understand and remember. He should teach more in the live session.
14 Peter is the best ISS. He made sure I understood concepts and helped with the practice problems and the project.
15 Peter the TA was extremely available outside of class and was an incredible resource. I could not have done the class without Peter. He was able to help organize the material in a way that the Professor was not. For example, the final project involved many different documents with different parts of the directions, making it difficult to understand what was expected. Peter was able to guide us to the essential information.
16 The teachers are great! Very helpful in explaining the work and the live class was very interactive. Videos are so fun to watch and Professor Kaul should really consider doing standup comedy.
17 The team project definitely helped with learning. I also liked having the team to work with in class. Peter was very informative, responsive and helpful.
18 The first modules and deliverables were very clear.
19 The way Gautam presents material – both in the asynchronous modules and during the live sessions – makes this course a real gem. Everything was always very clear, engaging and aligned with the case material and quizzes. Expectations were always very clear – especially around where a student should be on their learning path during the course. I would also like to highlight that there was no unnecessary stress created by poorly designed assignments. The quizzes were quite challenging, but having 2 chances really enhanced the learning derived from each.
